So of course I am thrilled about our new president elect. The disappointment over prop 8 passing is totally raining on my parade though. Tuesday night there was a spontaneous street party downtown and we all awoke to the realization that while we were spraying champagne on each other and drumming on city property, ballots discriminating against the gay community poured in to change California’s constitution. After such a magical election night the passing of prop 8 felt like a punch in the stomach. But to be completely honest I don’t think it’s going to last. The gay community and their supporters are far too riled up to let this be the final call. And as one man at a protest said, this is probably the best thing to happen, now the community is energized and ready to fight. Whole counties are filing law suits against the decision as well as the ACLU and private individuals. At this point, there’s no turning back. I am so excited to see the fight because in the end I think it’s going to be beautiful and I will probably cry the way I did when the West coast results came in last Tuesday and I heard “Barack Obama” and “next president of the United States of America.” I have never seen a more thrilling sight than when we all realized what had just happened and instinctively joined in celebration.

So you tell me, because I don’t live in California and don’t know, but I simply can NOT believe Prop 8 passed. At first I wanted to chalk it up to nosey-ass motherfucking conservatives and asshole who take it upon themselves to assume they know what Jesus wants from the rest of us.
But I’m not so sure now. I heard someone say that the language of the prop was a one-word change from the priginal proposition to *allow* gay marriage, and also that a number of people voted yes thinking they meant “Yes, it’s okay for teh homos to marry like the rest of us.”
Is there any truth to this? Because if so, it should would restore my faith in humanity a little bit.
so prop 8 is this 14 word addition to the state constitution: “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” For the most part I honestly believe it’s passing has to do with nosey ass conservatives, the mormons in particular. just google, mormon church prop 8, and you will find a plethora of reading on the issue. the mormon church helped raise over $70 mill for the cause and most of it came from outside california.
as far as the wording being confusing and people voting “yes” thinking they were voting to approve gay marriage, yeah i think a fair amount of the yes votes were because people were confused. i’m not sure if it was significant enough that it would have tipped the results though.
on the ballot it clearly stated “to ELIMINATE THE RIGHTS of same sex couples to marry” emphasis added. so maybe people went in thinking they were voting yes to preserve basic human rights and didn’t even bother to read the ballot, but i’m sure a lot of people read that and voted yes knowing exactly what they were doing.
and all these conservatives who are protesting the backlash are cracking me up when they reason that no ones rights have been eliminated when the ballot and the wording of the proposition clearly says that a very specific right is being taken away.
no worries that you don’t live in CA, you can still join in, there are petitions to sign and letters to write and protests all over the country to attend. i’m fairly certain your gayborhood is getting involved as most are around the country. i completely believe that this isn’t going to hold up in court. it can’t when the constitution clearly states that no rights can be denied any one group (among other things that made the supreme court overturn the ban in the first place). it’s going to be ok.
